The Lord's Resistance

Picture of a Congolese soldier

On Monday, January 23rd, 2006, eight Guatamalan members of the seventeen-thousand strong United Nations force in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were killed in a violent clash with the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) - a highly violent, radical Christian military insurgency with roots in Uganda, with a membership estimated to range from fifteen to forty-five hundred.

Thus far, the exact details of the battle are unclear. What is known from statements by the UN press division is that the one-hundred and five member Guatemalan special forces team was deployed within the area of Garamba National Park, near the eastern border of the DRC, wherin it was conducting counter-LRA operations. On Monday, reports surfaced that eight members of that team had been killed, though it is unclear wether the unit had been ambushed, subjected to a sneak-attack, or had directly engaged the LRA; neither has any word been had regarding the UN's military response to the battle.
