Arithmetic

I just took a second look at my budget, bank account, and scholarship information, and discovered something quite shocking: I might actually be able to take an actual vacation this Summer.

Assuming that this isn't some rather perverse arithmetical hallucination (and, up until now, surprisingly few of my hallucinations have involved arithmetic), it would mean that I could actually take time off for the first time in years. Books travel rather well, after all, so there'd be no reason that a little journeying would interfere with preparing for my comprehensive exams in August. I could even conceivably work on writing or editing a piece for publication. I'm not quite sure how to process this; my finely-honed reflex is rather to look around, warily, and await the sound and sight of the other shoe dropping... An odd state of affairs.

I have a friend who went to a coastal city and signed up as an "evening typist" for a law firm. It meant that if a document had to be typed up after working hours, he'd have to be there: but if not, he had the night off. He said it made the days free for tourism, and gave him pocket money to have fun at it.

Interesting. 'Might be an idea for next Summer. This time around, it looks like the studying will keep me just busy enough that I won't have the time to work even part-time. At best, I might have the time to do some volunteer work, though that might not work out if I'm moving around too much.
