As promised, here is the fruit of a brief survey of various efforts to eliminate the practice of female genital cutting, entitled "A Survey of Counter Approaches to the Practice of Female Circumcision":

Abstract:

"Female genital mutilation, a.k.a. female circumcision, or female genital cutting (FGC) – it is one of the most contentious & continuous issues of female human-rights violation in the region of sub-Saharan Africa, and yet also one of the most difficult to prevent. For several decades, a variety of states, inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have undertaken a variety of different policies & approaches in attempting to halt the practice, thus avoiding its deleterious physiological and psychological effects on its victims, and bringing local customs into line with international human-rights law. The purpose of this paper is to show that only those approaches that have attempted to approach practitioners within a context of dialogue, with arguments framed to meet the expectations of local cultural norms have show effectiveness in accomplishing these stated goals."
