Re: “CBU president urges major merger of Halifax universities” (June 16 story) and “CBU idea on merger offers lots to ponder” (June 17 column by Marilla Stephenson). While the Ivany report has been hailed by many for its stress on the importance of new thinking and new approaches as remedies for Nova Scotia’s problems, it is curious that so many of the responses to date have been to offer as examples of “new thinking” ideas that are actually extremely old.

Nowhere has this been more evident than in discussions of Nova Scotia’s universities. While Premier Stephen McNeil has cited our university system as one of the province’s success stories, providing a huge contribution to both its economy and culture, and dismissed the hoary old notion that we have “too many universities,” proposals for amalgamation and mergers continue to resurface...
