Lüjong - Löjong

2014-10-19 12.34.38

One may hear that the path to bodhicitta follows from embracing samsara and carrying it in your heart; lüjong goes one better by ensuring that you end-up carrying samsara in every individual muscle of your body. My Shambhala cohort and I were given an introduction to lüjong two or three years ago, by Shastri Henri Chapin; the calisthenics only last for about twenty-five minutes. Though I was in pretty good shape, my legs were aching sore for about three days afterwards.

Löjong training centres around a series of pith aphorisms originally conceived by Atisa, and written in their current form by Chekawa Yeshe Dorje. The phrases themselves serve as a guide for the development of ultimate and relative bodhicitta, often through developing an awareness of sunyata through meditation, and through tonglen practices. The basic aim is to become less of a jackass. It was my meditation instructor, David, who suggested that take-up tonglen and löjong as a way of dealing with my extremely rough and tangled relationship with J.
