The Philosophy Behind Why You Got a C+.

To paraphrase a recent conversation, I was recently discussing various things with one of my professors - a classical realist. When the topic of grade curves in the University came up, a friend eventually remarked that he knew a number of people who recieved an "A" or even "A+" for course-work. The professor responded that it was unlikely for anyone in his classes to ever achieve a level of work that he would find worthy of an A+, not even himself.

Upon briefly considering this dichotomy, I offered the suggestion that it could be that the "problem" stemmed from the fact that his conception of the perfect paper was transcendant [an ideal in the Platonic sense], rather than immanent - thus making it a slightly more difficult goal; the professor replied that I may be on to something.

What practical knowledge do we derive from this story? Well, if you're attending university, and need to pad your GPA, make certain that you only take classes with Materialists; the Platonists are impossible to please! :-)
